Magnetic field therapy at home: buying guide for device, mat and applicator
Share
Key takeaways
- A home system always consists of a control unit and an applicator. A mat on its own does not work.
- A complete system at OrthoSwiss starts at just over CHF 2,100 (as of September 2026), and the complete sets cost [[price:biomag-lumina-3d-e-set-fse]] and [[price:biomag-lumina-3d-e-set-nte]].
- You can also rent a device first, and the rent is credited toward the purchase.
- The Lumina 3D-e Easy and Clinic have the same performance. Only the Clinic lets you adjust intensity and treatment time yourself.
- Biomag recommends 20 minutes twice a day and at least 10 sessions.
- Check the contraindications before you buy, such as a pacemaker or pregnancy.
If you want to use magnetic field therapy regularly, sooner or later you will ask yourself whether your own device is worth it. The next questions follow right away: A mat or a local applicator? Easy or Clinic? A set or individual parts? This guide shows what matters when buying and works out what a complete system costs.
All information on effects and use comes from the manufacturer Biomag. It does not replace a medical assessment. Individual prices are loaded live from the shop, while the totals for the example systems are as of September 2026.
What is pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF)?
According to Biomag, pulsed magnetic field therapy, known internationally as PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field), is a non-invasive method of physical therapy. A device generates electromagnetic pulses with defined parameters such as frequency, shape and intensity. According to the manufacturer, these pulses pass through clothing and the full depth of the tissue to the application site.
A home system always consists of two parts:
- Control unit: generates the pulses and contains the programs.
- Applicator: delivers the pulses to the body, for example as a mat, a flat applicator or a ring (solenoid).
An applicator on its own does not work. If you only buy a therapy mat, you also need a control unit.
What makes Biomag's 3D technology different?
Biomag uses its own patented 3D technology. According to the manufacturer, it differs from conventional systems in these ways:
- A separate channel for each coil: Each coil in the applicator is connected separately. According to the manufacturer, this means no power is lost.
- No overlap: The coils generate their fields separately and at staggered times. According to Biomag, this keeps the pulse shape pure.
- Action from several sides: Multi-part applicators act on the application site from different directions.
Is your own device for home use worth it?
Biomag sees regularity as the biggest advantage of home use. At home, you can use the therapy repeatedly and over a longer period. According to the manufacturer, this makes better therapy results possible.
On top of that, home use is less time-consuming and more cost-effective in the long run, according to the manufacturer. Several family members can also use one device. The contraindications listed below apply to each person individually.
Your own device therefore makes the most sense if you want to use the therapy regularly over weeks or months. If you are not sure yet, you can also rent a device from OrthoSwiss first. If you then decide to buy, the rent is credited toward the purchase price.
Therapy mat, local applicator or solenoid: which design is right for you?
The most important decision when buying is the applicator, because it determines which parts of the body you can treat. There are three basic designs.
Therapy mats for large areas
A therapy mat covers large areas of the body, all the way to full-body use while lying down. Biomag's three-part mats can also be closed into a tunnel shape, into which you place an arm or a leg.
Local applicators for a specific spot
You place flat, smaller applicators directly on one spot. Biomag describes them for intensive local use. Some models are shaped for a specific body region, such as the foot or the hand.
Solenoids for arms, legs and joints
A solenoid is a round or oval ring into which you place, for example, a knee or an arm. Biomag uses this design for deep application on the limbs.

Easy, Clinic or a set: which control unit?
The two control units Lumina 3D-e Easy and Lumina 3D-e Clinic have the same performance: four output channels with up to 35 mT each, six programs, 3D pulses with a frequency of up to 81 Hz and a rechargeable battery. The difference lies in how you operate them.
On the Easy, intensity and treatment times are preset. You simply choose the program, nothing more. On the Clinic, you adjust intensity and treatment time yourself. This is worthwhile if you want to fine-tune the application, for example in consultation with your healthcare professional.
The sets consist of the Easy and two applicators: a large-area one and the local A6P2. The FSe set includes the versatile A11P-3D-e COMBI, and the NTe set includes the A12PL-3D-e full-body mat for use while lying down.
| Device or set | Contents | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Lumina 3D-e Easy with rechargeable battery | Control unit, settings preset | [[price:biomag-lumina-3d-e-easy-mit-akku]] |

How much does magnetic field therapy at home cost?
Because you always need a device and an applicator, the price of a single mat tells you little. The complete system is more meaningful. At OrthoSwiss, typical combinations look like this:
| Combination | Components | Total (as of September 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Entry level for one hand | Lumina 3D-e Easy and AL14P | CHF 2,185 |
| Entry level, local | Lumina 3D-e Easy and A6P2 | CHF 2,285 |
| Entry level for the foot | Lumina 3D-e Easy and AL16P | CHF 2,290 |
| Large-area | Lumina 3D-e Easy and A12PL-3D-e mat | CHF 2,870 |
| Adjustable, local | Lumina 3D-e Clinic and A6P2 | CHF 2,885 |
| Complete set | FSe set or NTe set | [[price:biomag-lumina-3d-e-set-fse]] or [[price:biomag-lumina-3d-e-set-nte]] |
A complete home system therefore starts at just over CHF 2,100. Applicators are also available individually, so you can expand a system later. You can find the full range in the Magnetic field therapy category.
If you do not want to invest the full amount right away, you can rent a device first. If you buy it later, the rent is credited toward the purchase price. We are happy to discuss the terms with you in person.
What should you look for when buying?
- Certified medical device: Look for classification as a medical device and a notified body. For its devices, Biomag states Class IIa under the EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR), with 3EC International a.s. as the notified body. In addition, there is quality management according to ISO 13485 and a CB certificate for the electrical safety of the Lumina 3D-e.
- The body area: Think about where you want to use the therapy. This determines the right applicator.
- Operation: Are fixed programs enough for you (Easy), or do you want to set intensity and time yourself (Clinic)?
- What's included: Check that the device and applicator are included together. Otherwise the system will not work.
- Contraindications: Before buying, check whether any of the points listed below apply to you.
- A point of contact: Biomag recommends having your suitability assessed individually by an expert beforehand. A provider you can reach before and after your purchase is therefore valuable.
How often and for how long is magnetic field therapy used?
Biomag recommends 20 minutes twice a day. According to the manufacturer, in more severe cases sessions can take place three or more times a day, usually for at least two weeks, and considerably longer for chronic conditions.
The programs are designed for 20 minutes, which according to the manufacturer is the recommended time for the respective effect. The duration can be extended to up to 90 minutes. On the Easy, however, the times are fixed. You can only adjust them on the Clinic.
Biomag names 10 sessions as the minimum. There is no fixed maximum. On medical advice, the therapy can also be repeated and used long term.
When must you not use magnetic field therapy?
Biomag lists the following contraindications. If any of these apply, the device must not be used. So check the list before you buy, not afterward.
- Pregnancy
- Pacemaker
- Bleeding conditions
- Menstrual bleeding
- Malignant neoplasms

Magnetic field therapy experiences: what does the manufacturer say about the effects?
In addition to reports from individual users, Biomag relies on its own evaluation: In expert evaluations from 2012 and 2013 with 1,266 patients and an average of 12 sessions, the success rate was 77% according to the manufacturer. According to the manufacturer, effectiveness increases further with more sessions.
This figure comes from the manufacturer itself and is not a guarantee for any individual case.

Frequently asked questions about magnetic field therapy at home
Which therapy mat is the test winner?
With claims such as “test winner,” check who carried out the test and by what criteria. More reliable are points you can verify yourself: Is the device certified as a medical device, is there a notified body, does the design suit your application, and do you have a point of contact you can reach?
Do I need an additional device for a therapy mat?
Yes. A therapy mat is an applicator and only works together with a control unit such as the Lumina 3D-e Easy or Clinic. If you do not have a device yet, a set is often the easier choice.
Can I use magnetic field therapy through clothing?
Yes, according to Biomag the pulses pass through clothing. Follow the operating manual for the specific application.
Can I try out or rent a device before buying?
We do not offer trial sessions. However, you can view the devices in Herisau and get advice. You can also rent a device first: If you then decide to buy, the rent is credited toward the purchase price.
Can the whole family use one device?
According to Biomag, yes. However, the contraindications apply to each person individually.
Can I buy additional applicators later?
Yes, applicators are also available individually. We are happy to confirm which models can be combined with your control unit before you buy.
Should I talk to my doctor before buying?
Definitely if your symptoms are unclear. According to Biomag, pain of unknown cause and an undetermined diagnosis are among the contraindications. So have the cause clarified by a doctor first.
